Tennessee Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Petersburg, TN for two kinds of buyers: contractors who order by the load and homeowners who need one pad or one driveway. Both groups ask for crusher run first. It is the standard Tennessee base stone, and it works under almost anything you build.

Material behaves differently on Central Basin ground, where clay sits thin over limestone.

Materials for Petersburg Projects

Most projects here start with what goes under the surface. For pavers, flagstone and flatwork, the bedding layer decides whether the surface stays flat or shifts after a wet winter. Get the bedding right and the patio holds. Skip it and you will be resetting stone within a season.

Screenings, also called #10 screenings or stone dust, are the standard bedding for pavers and flagstone. The fine, angular grit packs tight and levels easily under a screed board. Use about an inch over a compacted base, not more.

Under that bedding you need a base that will not pump or settle. Crusher run is the local answer, crushed stone with the fines left in so it compacts into a hard, stable surface. For a patio it goes down in lifts and gets compacted before the screenings go on top.

Where a pad carries heavier loads, or where a spec calls for graded base, use mineral aggregate base.

Washed stone handles the water around a patio. #57 stone and #67 stone both drain well, with #67 running slightly smaller. Use either in a French drain or behind a retaining wall. Drain Rock does the same work at a coarser size.

Sand matters too. Mason sand is the bedding and joint sand for brick, block and pavers. Washed sand levels and beds under slabs. For a quick comparison:

Ground and Conditions in Petersburg

The failure mode here is a base that looked fine in July and rutted by March. Central Basin soils are clayey over limestone and thin in many places, with rock at or near the surface in the flat cedar glade areas. On the hills around the rim of the basin you get cherty, silty clay instead.

That thin clay does not drain. Water sits in the base course, softens it, and the surface above starts to move. A patio built on a thin layer of stone over wet clay will heave and settle at the corners. Swapping pavers will not stop that; a deeper base and better drainage will.

Excavate until you reach firm ground, then build the base back in compacted lifts. A walkway can get by with a thinner base, but a patio that takes foot traffic and furniture wants more, and a driveway more still. Compact each lift before the next one goes down.

Drainage is the other half. Heavy rain runs off fast here because thin soil over solid limestone holds little water, and creeks rise quickly. Sinkholes and openings in the rock carry some runoff underground, so you cannot assume water leaves the way you expect. Slope the finished surface away from the house, and put a drainage layer of #57 stone or drain rock where water collects.

Runoff also scours creek banks and strips thin soil from slopes, especially on the hills around the basin rim. If your patio or pad sits near a slope, plan for that movement before you pour or lay anything.

Time your work around the weather. Winter and spring are the wettest seasons, and strong storms can bring flash flooding, so wet clay and high water delay jobs here more often than frost does. Frost stays shallow, and Tennessee's residential code puts footings at least 12 inches below grade, with the local building department setting the frost line. A shallow frost line is good news for flatwork, but it does not excuse a thin base.

Delivery to Petersburg and the Surrounding Area

Order online and pick your material by the ton or by the yard. Both work, but they measure different things, so decide which one fits how you are estimating.

Tons are weight. Yards are volume. A yard of dry screenings and a yard of wet crusher run do not weigh the same, and the difference shows up when you are short or left with a pile. If your plan gives you square feet and depth, convert to volume first, then order in tons so the load matches what the truck can legally carry.

Estimate by measuring length times width times depth in feet, then dividing by 27 for cubic yards. Add a little for compaction, since crusher run and mineral aggregate base both settle as they are packed down.

Tennessee Rock Supply delivers bulk material to Petersburg and the rest of Lincoln County, including Fayetteville, Flintville, Taft, Dellrose and Elora. Tell us where the truck can safely back in and where you want the pile dropped. A little planning on access saves a lot of shoveling.

Plan Your Order Around the Numbers

Start with the calculator to turn your measurements into tons or yards, then match the material to the job. Screenings for bedding, crusher run or mineral aggregate base underneath, washed stone where water needs to go. When your quantities are set, place the order and we will deliver bulk material to your site in Petersburg.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Petersburg, TN

What gravel is best for a driveway in Petersburg?

Crusher run is the standard choice. The fines left in the mix let it compact into a hard, stable surface that holds up to wet clay underneath. Top it with a washed stone such as #57 stone if you want a cleaner, freer-draining surface, or use driveway gravel over a compacted crusher run base.

How much material will my project need?

Measure length times width times depth in feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then order in tons. Add a little extra for compaction, since base stone settles as it is packed. For a patio, figure the bedding layer and the base course separately so neither one comes up short.

Where will the material be placed?

Wherever you tell us, as long as the truck can safely reach it. Mark the spot before the delivery and someone should be on site to point the driver to it. If nobody can be there, leave clear instructions when you order and we will follow them.
