Large River Rock for Tennessee Dry Creeks, Pond Edges and Slopes
Do not use light accent stone where a Tennessee slope or water feature needs visual weight. Large River Rock gives the feature a settled border.

Channels get built when the water is not in them. Late summer into early autumn is when a creek route across a yard is dry enough to shape, when the banks are firm rather than greasy, and when you can still see the scour line the June storms left. That window is short, and large river rock is heavy work, so the sensible order goes in while the ground is holding and the stone can be placed once rather than twice.
Two to four inches, rounded, in tans, grays and browns
The pieces run two to four inches across and are naturally rounded rather than crushed, with the worn faces and mixed coloring that come from water rather than from a crusher. Nothing about the shape locks together, which is the point and the limit in one line.
Weight is what makes this listing different from the smaller rounded stone. At two to four inches a single piece is enough to stay where it is put under sheet flow off a roof or a lawn, and a layer of them reads as a feature rather than as a surface.
Large river rock beside the smaller stone, riprap and #4
Three materials on this site sit close enough to be mistaken for it.
River Rock at one to three inches is the general bed and border stone. It covers more ground per ton, it looks finer beside a porch, and it travels in a storm where the bigger pieces stay put. Most decorative beds want it.
RipRap is the engineering answer to moving water, angular and sized in classes for scour. It works where this stone would be swept off and it looks like what it is.
#4 Crushed Stone at 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches is the angular, structural stone a size down. It goes into the working layer of a channel under the decorative stone, not on top of it.
This listing occupies the space between the three: heavy enough to hold on a gentle grade, rounded enough to look natural, and priced in effort rather than tonnage because it is placed by hand.
Where the bigger stone earns its place
Four jobs. The center line of a dry creek bed, where it gives the channel scale and keeps the smaller stone around it from traveling. The edge of a pond or a waterfall, where the visible stones need to look settled rather than scattered. Erosion points on a cleared slope, where storm runoff has started to cut and the flow is spread rather than concentrated. And accent groupings in a bed, used as a handful of larger pieces rather than as ground cover.
Two of those are about weight, two are about scale. If a job wants neither, the smaller rounded stone will do it better and cover more ground.
Planning depth, and what one ton covers on a slope
Depth is set by the stone, not by the drawing. A layer one stone deep migrates, so plan on three to four inches as a minimum and six where water runs over it.
No weight is published for this listing on its own. The nearest family on this site is the rounded one to three inch stone at about 2,700 lb per cubic yard, roughly 1.35 tons to the yard, so treat the figures here as approximate. A ton is therefore about 0.74 cubic yards, or 20 cubic feet. Spread four inches deep that covers about 60 square feet of slope face, and at six inches about 40. Rounded stone never packs tight, so take those as the upper end and run your own area through the river rock calculator.
A flagstone walk and a row of raised beds: the stone goes around, not under
Two hypothetical examples, both of which come in as requests for this material and both of which need it in a different position than the caller expects.
A flagstone walk is set on a fine, screedable bed, so the flagstone itself goes over Screenings. Where this stone belongs is the border. A 45 foot walk with an 18 inch band down both sides is 45 x 1.5 x 2 = 135 square feet. At four inches that is 135 x 4 = 540, divided by 12 = 45 cubic feet, divided by 27 = 1.67 cubic yards, about 2.25 tons.
Raised vegetable beds are the same shape of answer. The frames get filled with Garden Soil, not with stone. The rock goes in the paths between them, where it keeps the mower and the mud out. Three paths of 20 feet by 2 feet is 120 square feet, at four inches 120 x 4 = 480, divided by 12 = 40 cubic feet, divided by 27 = 1.48 cubic yards, roughly 2 tons. Rounded stone this size is awkward to wheelbarrow across, so a path people walk daily is better in walkway gravel with this material used as the edging.
Why a play area is the one to say no to
A playground surface is the third request and the clear no. Stones of this size do not absorb a fall, they roll underfoot, and pieces small enough to lift are pieces small enough to throw.
Play areas want something that gives underfoot and stays where it is put, which on this site means 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel or Shredded Mulch. Keep the big stone for the border around the outside if you want the look.
Placed one at a time, so order to suit the day
This is not a shovel material. Pieces get lifted and set, which means a small tonnage takes longer than a big load of chip and a drop spot a long way from the work costs real hours.
Put the load as close to the channel or the bed as the truck can safely reach, on something firm, and lay a tarp so nothing disappears into the grass. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code and the truck needs clear access to a place it can tip, which the delivery page covers. Work out the area, take the coverage figures as the upper end, then set a quantity and a date here, or ask about a tight access through contact first.
